Empowering Cities and Citizens”: Erasmus University & Citymar Consultancy, 6-7 November 2018

The conference “Empowering Cities and Citizens” is organised on the occasion of the 60th anniversary of the Institute for Housing and Urban Development Studies (IHS), the 105th anniversary of Erasmus University Rotterdam and of the 1st year of the Erasmus initiative “Vital Cities and Citizens” (VCC). Citymar Consultancy is the joint initiator of the conference, together with Erasmus University Rotterdam.

Urban research and practice connecting

The event offers an excellent opportunity to discuss the ‘hot topics’ of urban research and practice, to find ways of measuring outcomes and to look at the ‘status quo’ of the SDG implementation with colleagues from around the world, whether local and regional governments, practitioners, researchers or other stakeholders.

Together, we aim to make cities vital, well-managed, liveable, sustainable and fair. We can only achieve that with professionals that are equipped to handle complex urban challenges. How do cities and communities learn and co-create knowledge? The conference offers an opportunity to reflect on current and new urban trends for both institutions, whether in urban development and management, or humanities, social and behavioural sciences.

Regional branding: Zuid-Holland, the Netherlands

InnovationQuarter (the regional development company for Zuid-Holland, the Netherlands) asked Citymar Consultancy to work on the regional marketing approach of the province of Zuid-Holland. In close collaboration with several cities, businesses and organizations in the region, we developed the strategy, including the distinctive identity for the region.

A strong regional profile is, of course, a means to an end, not a goal in itself. It can be beneficial to the partners located in the region. And vice versa, strong cities and organizations togehter make a strong region. It’s all about smart collaboration on various (geographic) scales, all based on what is relevant from the customer’s perspective. A few elements of the narrative: “This delta region, in the western part of the Netherlands is at home in the world. Acting as a testing ground for global challenges, we are committed to coming up with purposeful contributions to the problems the earth faces. We are focused on sharing pragmatic solutions through international collaboration. This delta works. For the world.”

Based on the strategy, we also developed a pragmatic toolkit with materials partners in the region can use in their own communication. Part of the digital toolkit is a short film:
